Common questions about teeth whitening

Your teeth whitening questions answered

Is teeth whitening safe?

Yes - our dentist-supervised whitening kits use approved gels that protect enamel while gently removing stains. Patients across Tooting and South London love their natural results.

How long does whitening take?

Most patients notice results within a few days, with full brightness achieved in 10-14 days of consistent use.

Will my teeth feel sensitive?

Some mild sensitivity can occur, but it usually fades quickly. Our whitening gels are designed to minimise irritation.

How long will my results last?

With good hygiene and regular dental check-ups, your brighter smile can last 12-18 months. Avoiding staining foods and drinks helps maintain results.

Can everyone have teeth whitening?

Most adults are suitable. Your dentist will check your oral health first and may recommend other treatments such as hygiene services or white fillings before whitening if needed.

Why do teeth become discoloured?

Over time, teeth can lose their whiteness; it’s a normal ageing process where the enamel on your teeth eventually erodes and uncovers the tooth dentine. But there are several other reasons for tooth discolouration, such as:

  • Certain foods and drinks, like coffee, tea, some soft drinks.
  • Smoking.
  • Poor dental hygiene.
  • Some medications and antihistamines.
  • Some medical treatments, like chemotherapy.

Teeth discolouration can cause you to feel self-conscious about your smile, leaving you embarrassed about the darker shade of your teeth. At Waterfall Dental & Implant Centre, we offer a teeth whitening treatment that is completely safe and gives you back your smile.

How does teeth whitening work?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic procedure using an approved bleaching agent to remove stains and discolouration from teeth to restore their whiteness.

A relatively simple process, once we have assessed the type and level of staining on your teeth, we will make a bespoke tray that fits snugly over your teeth. After adding a bleaching agent, which is either a hydrogen or carbamide peroxide, into the tray, your dental technician will transfer the agent onto your teeth and the whitening process begins. The result will depend on the level of initial staining and your natural tooth colour before the whitening treatment.

Teeth whitening kits to use at home are available and, after a few uses, will whiten your teeth to some degree but more gradually. You may find with some at-home kits, the tray and bleaching agent can be worn overnight.

Kimberley Leighton

Dr Olivia is fantastic. I consistently get appointments promptly. She is efficient, precise, knowledgeable, and helpful. I have long had a fear of going to the dentist, but since seeing Dr Olivia, it doesn’t worry me anymore and I feel reassured that I’m in good hands any time I’ve had an issue.

Front desk team are also excellent, easy to reach via phone, and remember details about any dental issue I’m having, so I don’t need to keep repeating myself. Overall, good, efficient, expert vibes. I recommend! I especially recommend if you are an anxious patient like me.

Dayane Lorente

I was extremely pleased with Dr Alia Johar’s care. She was very helpful, gentle, and showed such kindness towards my little one, making her feel completely comfortable during the appointment. It’s clear that she treats her young patients with great patience and attention. I truly recommend her! Thanks so much!

Josephine Camilleri

Dr Janki went above and beyond to make it happen. She booked me in with her the same day when she had finished her clinic and did the extraction in her own time. Such a lovely, pleasant, caring and professional Dr.

Lily Butterworth

Dr Alia performed an extraction and was brilliant throughout the entire process! Any dental work can always be a bit daunting and she was very reassuring and professional and was able to answer all my questions!
